My work can be divided distinctly into two different areas, people, and nature. Nature has been my inspiration for a long time, in the early years using mainly photographic reference and more recently shifting away from photographs to draw directly from life in the field. This shift in my practice has demanded a more responsive and immediate approach, forcing me to leave behind my small brushes and controlled drawing skills. For the past 4 years I have had to unlearn how I draw and embrace a new language of mark making, one that wasn’t always very pretty or successful!
Recently I have returned to work on the other area that interests me, people. Currently I am developing my skills in figure drawing, however very soon I will be incorporating them into storytelling. My desire is to interweave both nature and people together forming a narrative which allows the viewer to enter into the story through their own emotions and experience. Inspiration for these paintings will be drawn from my own life experiences and from an interest in the human condition. This work will focus on identity, connection and belonging. Please keep a watch on my Instagram (lorna.hamilton.artist) and website to see my progression.
Originally from N.Ireland, I now reside in the East Midlands, England. I am a full-time painter with tutoring and arts facilitator experience.
